Book Printing

Book Printing Services in the UK

A book in a reader’s hands feels different to a book on a screen. Paper choice, binding, weight, the way the cover sits under the fingers, these are the things that turn a manuscript into an object readers actually want to own. Get them wrong and the book that took years to write feels disposable. Get them right and it earns a spot on the shelf.

At UK Publishing House, our book printing services cover every format authors and publishers need. Paperback, hardback, dust-jacketed editions, foil-stamped specials, large-format children’s books, short runs for launches and signings, full-scale runs for distribution. We work with UK printers we trust, on stocks we’ve tested, with quality control at every stage so the books you receive are the books you ordered.

Why Printing Quality Matters

The Difference Between a Printed Book and a Properly Printed Book

Anyone can upload a PDF to a print-on-demand site and order a stack of books. What you get back is rarely the book you imagined. Paper that’s too thin and shows the print through. Cover laminate that scuffs the moment it comes out of the box. Binding that splits after a single reader. Trim cuts that miss by a millimetre and chop into the artwork.

Professional printing means choosing the right paper for your book, the right binding for your page count, the right finish for the cover stock, and working with a printer who treats your job the way they’d treat a Penguin or HarperCollins job. That’s what we do. Every print run is matched to the kind of book it is, what it’s for, and how many copies you actually need.

Whether you’re printing five copies for a launch reading or five thousand for retail distribution, we make sure the books that arrive feel like the books they were always meant to be.

  • Paperback, hardback, dust-jacketed, and special editions
  • Short runs from 5 copies through to bulk runs for retail distribution
  • Stock, binding, and finish chosen to suit your book, not a default template

Book Printing Services

What’s Included in Our
Book Printing Service

Every printed book is a set of decisions about stock, binding, and run size. Here are the six tracks we cover, from short paperback runs through to special editions and bulk retail printing.

01

Paperback Printing

The format most readers buy and most authors print. We handle paperback printing across every genre, fiction, non-fiction, memoirs, academic, business, and more, in trim sizes that match what your market expects. Cream or white interior stock, matt or gloss laminate, perfect-bound spine with a clean, professional finish. We proof every job and replace anything that arrives below standard.

02

Hardback Printing

Hardback editions for books that deserve them. Cloth-bound or printed-case, with or without a dust jacket, smyth-sewn binding for longer page counts, head and tail bands, and a finish that feels like the books you grew up admiring on shelves. We handle the spec, the proofing, and the print supervision so the finished hardback is genuinely worth the upgrade.

03

Short-Run Print Runs

Not every author needs five thousand copies on launch day. Short runs from as few as twenty-five copies are ideal for book signings, launch events, gifting, review copies, and first runs while you’re still testing the market. We print on the same stocks and to the same standards as our larger runs, the only thing that changes is the quantity.

04

Print-On-Demand Setup

For authors selling primarily through Amazon and global retailers, print-on-demand removes the need to hold stock. We set up your title on Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, and the other major POD networks, with print specifications correct for each platform, so a reader in Sydney or San Francisco can order your book and have it printed locally and shipped without you holding inventory.

05

Special Editions & Foil Finishes

Foil stamping, spot UV, deboss, coloured edges, signed and numbered editions, the things that turn a book into a collector’s object. We work with authors and publishers on special editions for crowdfunders, launch limited runs, and bookshop exclusives. Every finish is tested on a physical proof before the full run is committed.

06

Bulk Distribution Printing

For authors with a retail distribution deal, an event circuit, or a wholesale buyer, we manage bulk printing from a few hundred copies to several thousand. We coordinate stock, scheduling, palletisation, and direct-to-warehouse delivery for distributors, so your books land where they need to be in the timescales your buyers expect.

The formatting looked clean, the structure flowed naturally and the final version genuinely felt publication-ready. Working with UK Publishing House felt easy overall, and the finished book came out looking exactly how I hoped it would.

Really good experience overall. Sam Naran handled my children's picture book and was so patient with me, especially since I kept changing the illustrations brief. The final product looked beautiful, honestly better than I expected. Everything moved smoothly and the communication throughout was great.

Book printing costing

How Much Does Book Printing Cost in the UK?

Print pricing depends on more variables than most other services. Page count, trim size, paper stock, cover laminate, binding type, run quantity, and any finishing extras all change the per-unit cost. A 200-page paperback printed in a run of 500 sits at a very different price point to a 320-page hardback with a foil-stamped jacket printed in 100. There’s no honest flat rate, anyone offering one is averaging across jobs that shouldn’t be averaged.

What we do give you is a clear, itemised quote once we understand the book, the run, and what you want the finished object to feel like. Stock samples on request. No setup charges hidden in the small print. No price changes once the file goes to press.

The best starting point is a quick conversation about the book, the format, and how many copies you actually need. Tell us that and we’ll come back with options and prices.

Frequently Asked

Frequently Asked Questions.

Honest answers to the questions every author asks before signing on. If yours isn't here, the 30-minute consultation will cover it.

Book Your Consultation
01 What’s the minimum number of copies you can print? +
We can print runs from as few as 25 copies for paperbacks and 50 copies for hardbacks. Below that, print-on-demand is usually a better economic fit, and we can set that up for you instead. Above 25 copies, short-run digital and offset printing both become viable and the per-unit price drops as quantities go up.
02 How long does book printing take in the UK? +
Standard paperback short runs typically take 10 to 14 working days from file approval to delivery. Hardbacks run longer, usually 18 to 25 working days because of the binding and casing process. Special editions with foil stamping, deboss, or coloured edges add another week or two depending on the finishes involved. Print-on-demand setup is faster, the file is live on retailer networks within 3 to 5 working days of submission.
03 Do you supply paper samples before printing? +
Yes. For any author placing a run of 100 copies or more, we can post out paper sample swatches and a printed sample booklet so you can feel the stocks and finishes before you commit. Choosing paper from a screen rarely works, the weight, opacity, and texture matter and they only register in hand. We’d rather you held the samples before signing off than have you receive a finished run that doesn’t feel right.
04 Can you print and ship books directly to bookshops or distributors? +
Yes. We arrange palletised shipping direct to retail distributors, bookshop chains, and warehouses for authors with wholesale arrangements in place. For smaller event runs we ship boxed to your address, an event venue, or directly to a book signing location. Delivery is built into the quote so there are no surprise logistics costs at the end of the job.
05 Should I print short runs in the UK or go print-on-demand? +
It depends on what you’re doing with the books. If you’re selling primarily through Amazon to readers anywhere in the world, print-on-demand is often the more sensible route, no stock to hold, books printed close to the reader, no shipping from your side. If you’re running events, signing copies, selling direct, or supplying bookshops, a short or medium UK run gives you better unit cost, better quality control, and books you can actually pick up and put a hand to. Many authors use both routes, POD for global retail and short runs for direct sales and events.
