How We Hire

Four steps from application to offer.

Four steps, no fluff. From your first email to a written offer takes about two weeks for staff roles, and roughly a week for freelance trials.

01

You apply

Send us your CV and a short note on why this role. Portfolio links are welcome. We read everything that comes in.

02

Intro call

A half-hour video call with the team lead. We talk about the work, your background, and what the role actually looks like. Ask us anything.

03

Paid trial brief

A short paid task that's pulled from the actual job. Editors copy-edit a chapter. Designers work up a cover concept. Marketers draft a launch outline.

04

Offer & onboarding

A written offer lands within 48 hours of the trial. For your first month you're paired with someone already in the role, so you've always got someone to ask.

Book Your Consultation
01 Do you offer remote roles? +
Yes, lots of them. Editorial, ghostwriting, design and development are mostly remote or hybrid. Marketing and the publishing assistant role lean hybrid out of our London office. When a role is fully remote, we hire from anywhere in the UK and sometimes further afield.
02 Do you accept freelancers? +
Yes. A big share of our editors, ghostwriters, designers and developers work with us per project. Rates are agreed at the start and we pay within 14 days of the invoice.
03 I am early in my career. Should I still apply? +
The Publishing Assistant role is built for people just starting out. We train you in. For editor, designer or ghostwriter roles we look for two to three years of relevant work, or a strong portfolio of finished projects.
04 How long does the hiring process take? +
About two weeks for permanent positions, from first email to written offer. Freelance trials take roughly a week. Either way, we try to reply to everyone within five working days, even if the answer is no.
05 What does the paid trial involve? +
A short task pulled from the day job. For editors it's usually a chapter copy-edit. For designers, one or two cover concepts. For marketers, a campaign plan for a book that's actually coming out. We pay a flat fee for the trial whether we hire you or not.
06 Can I send a speculative application? +
Please do. If you work in editing, ghostwriting, design, marketing or web development, send us your CV and a few samples. We keep a shortlist and get in touch when the right role opens up.
