You still approve every chapter, every case study, and every heading. Nothing goes out under your name until you have read it and agreed to it.
Some authors already have a draft, but it needs shape. We look at the order of your chapters, the balance between story and advice, and whether each chapter does what a reader needs it to do at that point in the book.
Once the structure is right, we go through the manuscript line by line. We fix grammar, tighten loose sentences, and catch the small errors that slip past even careful writers.

They also chase up payments, handle the legal detail in a contract you might otherwise miss, and act as a buffer between you and the publisher when awkward conversations come up. A good agent will also tell you honestly if your book is not ready yet, which is worth more than it sounds at the time. Getting a reply can take weeks, and a firm no is far more common than a yes, so it helps to go in with realistic expectations.
There are literary agents for self-help books UK-wide, and very few of them are based in Cardiff itself. Most agencies are still concentrated in London, though plenty accept submissions from anywhere in the country and work entirely by email. Once the manuscript is complete, it goes through structural editing, then a line edit, then a final proofread before anything is considered finished. Each stage catches something different, and skipping one is the most common reason a finished book still reads roughly.
